A new exhibition exploring Finnish happiness has opened in Berlin, drawing significant interest, while plans for a permanent happiness museum in Helsinki are advancing, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The exhibition, titled Ernsthaft glücklich. Seriously Finnish (Seriously Happy. Seriously Finnish), premiered last week in the German capital. Demand was so high that not all visitors could be accommodated on opening night, and major German media—including Der Tagesspiegel, which featured it on its front page—have covered the event.

Curated by film producer Johannes Lassila and screenwriter Miikko Oikkonen, the exhibition offers visitors a taste of Finnish culture, including a “silence room” where Germans can practice the Finnish art of quietude. Lassila, who is also behind the upcoming Helsinki museum, described the project as a response to global curiosity about Finland’s reputation for happiness.

“Finland has become something like a Shangri-La,” Lassila told Yle. “Foreigners think that if they just get to Finland, they’ll learn the secret to happiness. But when they stand on Senate Square in November rain and no one can explain it, this museum will.”

Initially seeking public funding, the team turned to private investors to accelerate the project. Lassila confirmed that a central Helsinki location has been secured and financing is nearly complete. The Happiness Experience Museum, described as an “immersive cultural and tourism destination,” is set for an official announcement later this year, with plans to open in 2025.
