Icon of the Seas resumes operations after repairs in Turku

The world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, built in Turku, has resumed operations. The cruise ship returned to the sea last Saturday and is currently en route to Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sailing in the Caribbean.

Icon of the Seas underwent unexpected repairs at the end of September, which led to an unplanned dry dock period. The repairs were completed on Friday. According to Cruise Industry News, the issue surfaced during a cruise, prompting the ship to reduce its speed. Meyer Turku declined to comment on the reason for the dry docking, citing customer confidence concerns. As a result, Royal Caribbean canceled a cruise that was set to begin on September 28.

Icon of the Seas made its maiden voyage from Miami earlier this year in January. Currently, Meyer Turku’s shipyard is also constructing the second vessel in the Icon class, Star of the Seas, along with a third unnamed ship in the same class. Additionally, a fourth Icon vessel has been ordered, along with options for a fifth and sixth ship in the series.
