Sweden’s government has ordered the Armed Forces to build a new digital command system, enabling troops to engage targets in minutes rather than hours, SVT reports.
The 5 billion SEK investment, drawn from emergency defence funds, will establish a cloud-based platform for real-time drone footage, satellite imagery, and troop positioning, accessible via tablets and phones in the field. About 2.5 billion SEK is earmarked for the command system and AI, 1 billion SEK for a secure Swedish cloud, and 1.5 billion SEK for 5G, satellite links, networks, and encryption.
Defence Minister Pål Jonson (M) said the system, inspired by Ukraine’s Delta platform, will make Sweden “stronger and faster” on future battlefields. Cyber chief Mattias Hanson called it a revolution in modern combat, replacing manual processes that currently delay engagement by hours.
The system will also integrate AI to sort vast amounts of data. Jonson acknowledged risks in uploading sensitive material to the cloud but said safeguards are in place to protect sovereignty.
Implementation is already underway, with deployment expected by the 2026–2027 turn of the year, accelerated by one to two years.
