New Faroese TV series explores dating in a small society

KVF reports that filming has begun on Gøtubrá, a new Faroese television series about finding love in a small country where everyone knows everyone.

The series follows Helena, a single woman in her 30s who has just moved back to the Faroe Islands. Directors Anna Maria Sloan and Annika Djurhuus Olsen say the story was inspired by their own experiences after returning home.

“You cannot simply go out on dates in the Faroe Islands, because everyone knows everyone. People immediately hear that you are seeing someone,” one of the directors says.

The directors want to portray an ordinary reality from Faroese dating life, which they say differs somewhat from dating elsewhere. They describe that reality as funny, sad and vulnerable, and say people should dare to show it.

The first scenes are being filmed now, and the directors have international ambitions for the series. The production team includes Faroese contributors as well as people from countries including Sweden and the United States.
