Finland’s Border Guard has adjusted the eastern border’s restricted zone in Lappeenranta’s Vainikkala area, moving the Vartioniemi peninsula into the controlled zone as of this week, state broadcaster Yle reports.

The peninsula, once home to the now-defunct Vainikkala border station, now requires a permit for entry. The station closed in 2022, and its buildings were demolished two years later.

Deputy commander Lt. Col. Antti Virta explained that the area was previously excluded from the restricted zone because permits were issued directly from the station. Applications now must be submitted electronically.

The change aligns with broader updates to the border zone between Vaalimaa and Parikkala, though the total restricted area remains unchanged. Adjustments are permitted between fixed points set by government decree, such as the Vainikkala border checkpoint and Ristisaarensuo.

Virta noted that modifications support border security, including maintenance of the barrier fence along the eastern border, expected to be completed by year’s end.
