Helsinki swimming stadium reopens after renovation but faces further repairs in autumn
Helsinki’s historic Swimming Stadium (Uimastadion) will reopen to the public on Mother’s Day, Sunday 12 May, following partial renovations, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle. However, a more extensive overhaul of the facility’s pools is scheduled to begin in autumn.
The stadium’s outdoor areas have been refurbished, with updated landscaping, plantings, and stonework. “The entrance now looks absolutely stunning,” said Katja Kuusisto, team leader for the City of Helsinki, in an interview with Radio Suomi lähelläsi. She noted that while cracked pool tiles—a common issue in Finland’s climate—have been patched, the repairs are temporary until the larger renovation.
“It’s been fixed to look presentable, but more importantly, it prevents injuries from sharp edges,” Kuusisto added.
Visitors can check real-time crowd levels online to plan their visits, a tool intended to help manage capacity during peak times.
Kumpula outdoor pool also reopens with upgrades
The nearby Kumpula outdoor pool will open on 25 May after its own refresh, including repainted pool floors and walls. Though Kuusisto has not yet seen the results in person, she reported receiving positive feedback: “I’ve heard the colours are just beautiful. The pools there are now in great shape.”
On Wednesday, lifeguards at the Swimming Stadium practiced rescue drills in preparation for the summer season, as captured in Yle’s coverage.
Both facilities are operated by the City of Helsinki’s sports and recreation division, Stadika.
