Kringvarp Føroya reports that indoor rowing world champion Vár Guriardóttir Hansen is organising a rowing event at Ovastevna in Nólsoy to promote coastal rowing, which will become an Olympic sport in 2028.
The event will take place on Friday at 6pm and Saturday at 2pm. Participants will be invited to try to set a world record over 100 metres.
Hansen’s record is 14.6 seconds. The men’s world record is 12.4 seconds and is held by her boyfriend, who will also attend the event.
Hansen wants to develop coastal rowing in the Faroe Islands and is raising money for a coastal rowing boat. There is currently only one double coastal boat in the islands, and the plan is to buy a boat for one person.
Hansen plans to focus on coastal rowing and will soon attend trials for the Danish national team in the sport, which will make its Olympic debut in 2028.
