Man missing without a trace in Finnish fell for two months despite extensive search
A man has been missing for nearly two months in the Kilpisjärvi fell area of Enontekiö, northern Finland, despite an extensive search operation involving authorities from both Finland and Norway, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The search has proven unusually difficult, as the man’s phone remains off and his exact route is unknown. Police describe such a complete disappearance as rare even in Lapland’s remote wilderness.
Search efforts began on March 19 after the man was reported missing. Initial emergency operations lasted four days before transitioning to periodic searches, which have continued almost weekly. Norwegian police assisted in March with helicopters and snowmobiles, while Finnish authorities have used drones, search dogs, and snowmobiles when weather permits.
The focus has been on the route between Kilpisjärvi and Halti, where the man was believed to be heading. All wilderness huts in the area have been checked, and the Finnish-Norwegian border zone has been examined. Despite these efforts, no trace has been found, and local hikers and reindeer herders have also reported no sightings.
Police have interviewed the man’s relatives and local business owners, reviewed surveillance footage from Kilpisjärvi’s village shop, and analysed phone records and cell tower data. However, without an active phone or GPS signal, tracking has been impossible.
