A new outpatient cancer clinic has opened at Holbæk Hospital in Region Sjælland, significantly cutting travel time for patients in western Zealand, reports Danish broadcaster DR.

Mikkel Andersen, a cancer patient from Tølløse, previously faced a 25-kilometre journey to Roskilde for treatment. Now, with the clinic’s opening, he will save hours each week—time he can spend with his family and at work.

“It’s no longer a full-day project just to get treatment,” Andersen told DR. He hopes the shorter travel will allow him to “live more like I did before the diagnosis” rather than having his waking hours consumed by medical appointments.

The clinic, operated by Zealand University Hospital, is the second of its kind in the region, following a similar facility opened in Nykøbing Falster last autumn. Its goal is to improve quality of life for patients by reducing the burden of frequent trips for blood tests, scans, and consultations, said Maria Kondrup, chief physician and department head.

“These patients endure gruelling treatment and frequent visits. Bringing care closer means they can spend their energy on recovery, not transport,” Kondrup explained.

The benefits extend to families as well, noted Birgitte Lauridsen of the Danish Cancer Society’s regional branch. “When a loved one is ill, shorter travel times mean more time at home—and more quality time together,” she said.
