Meteorologists warn of rare late-spring storm heading for southern Norway
Norway’s Meteorological Institute may issue a red alert for coastal areas as a powerful storm approaches southern Norway on Easter Sunday, NRK reports.
Forecasters warn the storm, named “Dave,” could bring an abrupt end to the holiday weekend, with unusually strong winds for late spring. “It’s rare to see such powerful winds this late in the season in southern Norway. We’re taking this very seriously,” said Geir Ottar Fagerlid, a senior meteorologist at the institute.
The storm, which originated in the UK, is expected to move across Scotland on Saturday before reaching Norway’s southwest and southern coasts by Sunday morning. Meteorologists describe the system as bringing “severe storm conditions” along the coast and “extremely strong gusts” inland.
As of Friday morning, no official warnings had been issued, but the institute confirmed it was in the “assessment phase.” A decision on potential red alerts—indicating extreme weather—is expected Friday afternoon. Authorities warn of possible road closures and ferry disruptions.
Storm “Dave” follows a pattern of late-season storms but is considered unusually intense for April. The Meteorological Institute urged residents in affected areas to prepare for potential travel delays and hazardous conditions.
