Iceland, rescue operations, severe weather

Rescue teams in Iceland were deployed in full force over the weekend as severe weather conditions struck the Sandskeið highland area and the Westfjords region.

Heavy snow, strong winds, and poor visibility created hazardous conditions, prompting emergency responses to assist stranded travellers and secure critical infrastructure. Local authorities reported multiple incidents of vehicles becoming stuck in snowdrifts, particularly along remote routes in the Westfjords.

In Sandskeið, a highland plateau known for its unpredictable weather, rescue crews worked to clear blocked roads and provide aid to drivers caught in whiteout conditions. The Icelandic Meteorological Office had issued warnings for blizzard-like conditions, urging caution for those travelling in affected areas.

The Westfjords, a sparsely populated peninsula in northwest Iceland, frequently faces severe winter storms due to its exposed coastal location. Rescue operations in the region often involve coordination between local volunteer teams and the Icelandic Coast Guard, which provides air support when ground travel is impossible.

No serious injuries were reported, but authorities advised against non-essential travel until conditions improve. The weather system is expected to weaken by early next week.
