Local inspector praises Pizpala Grill in Tampere despite recent cleanliness controversy
On a memorable Friday, October 25, Marita Kiuru, owner of Pizpala Grill, received a visit from a food safety inspector from Tampere. Following the inspection, she was pleased to hear that all previously noted issues had been rectified. Anticipating a positive outcome, Kiuru was considering hiring additional staff.
However, that same day, local newspapers published online articles highlighting serious cleanliness concerns at her grill. The reports included disturbing images of rodent droppings and unsanitary surfaces from past inspections, shared widely across social media channels, leading to a sharp decline in customers.
Kiuru learned of the damaging news the following day, which featured photos taken during earlier visits showing unsanitary conditions. Now facing a potential crisis for her business, she worries that the news of improvements may not reach her clientele.
Despite the negative press, Kiuru claims the hygiene of her grill was never compromised. The recent inspections from July and again in October found no signs of pests, and she expressed frustration at the portrayal of her establishment based on outdated photos from a cleaning closet rather than the kitchen itself.
Kiuru, who has operated Pizpala for over a year and a half, questioned why these cleanliness issues were not addressed under previous management, given that the grill has been in operation since 1982. She emphasized the need for better communication with regulatory authorities and suggested that inspections should be conducted at times that allow owners to respond immediately to any findings.
Recent data indicate that many restaurants are struggling with maintaining proper food hygiene, as incidents leading to the lowest ratings in the food safety reports have significantly increased in recent years. Despite facing harsh criticism online, Kiuru has received encouragement from supporters and is determined to improve her practices.
