Norway launches investigation into fatal microlight aircraft crash near Oppdal airport
The Accident Investigation Board of Norway has initiated a full investigation into the microlight aircraft crash in Oppdal. The incident occurred on Monday, 1st July, when a microlight plane crash-landed on the E6 highway near Oppdal airport. The victims of the crash were identified as 55-year-old Åsmund Mellemsæter and 53-year-old Joachim Frich.
The microlight aircraft, which did not carry a black box flight recorder, left little evidence or data regarding the flight, making the investigation challenging. The accident took place about 300 meters before the runway.
The microlight aircraft, a model known as the Aeroprakt A-22L2, crashed less than 300 meters east of the runway at Oppdal airport. The plane had taken off from Oppdal airport at 10:42 am and crashed after approximately half an hour of flight time.
According to the Accident Investigation Commission, shortly after the aircraft passed the end of the runway, it started a right turn, suddenly lost all altitude, and hit the E6 highway. The commission is now providing more details about the incident.
