Electrical fault kills 50 pigs in Jokioinen farm fire
A fire likely caused by an electrical fault in a heat lamp killed 50 pigs at Joni Jaakkola’s farm in Latovainio village, Jokioinen, last October, Yle reports.
The blaze broke out at 1:30 a.m. on 27 October 2025. Jaakkola, alerted by his monitoring system, called emergency services but said efforts with a single hose were ineffective against the intense fire. Most pigs died from smoke and confinement.
Electrical faults account for roughly 80% of farm fires, according to Jaana Sohlman of Lähi-Tapiola, who reviewed five years of major claims. While newer livestock buildings now incorporate better fire safety, Finnish law does not require smoke detectors in animal housing.
Neighbours and volunteer firefighters arrived quickly, limiting damage. Jaakkola, who runs a farm with up to 1,000 pigs, said the support was overwhelming. The farm has since rebuilt the damaged section.
