Lagerholm criticizes Swedish government for handling of Israel-Palestine conflict
Frida Lagerholm has criticized the Swedish government for its rhetoric regarding Israel’s actions, which, she argues, differs notably from that of other governments and officials from the EU and UN who have condemned Israeli military strikes. She states that while the Swedish government begins its statements by affirming Israel’s right to self-defense, it fails to address the disproportionate death toll, which she notes has exceeded 40,000.
Lagerholm acknowledges that Sweden provides generous humanitarian aid to Palestinians but believes the government is not fulfilling its commitment to uphold humanitarian law. She expresses confusion over the government’s stance, particularly as hospitals and ambulances come under attack and medical supplies are blocked.
In a discussion with readers, Lagerholm asserted that Israel’s actions violate the laws of war and criticized the Swedish government’s apparent acceptance of these actions. She emphasizes the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to be allowed through the border into Gaza, arguing that it is a political decision that should be more vigorously pursued by the Swedish government.
Additionally, Lagerholm and the opposition denounced Sweden’s abstention during a recent UN vote on a resolution calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, when asked for comment, stated that it is not her role to judge the proportionality of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, referring instead to international courts which have indicated that Israel must do more to protect civilians.
