Icelandic authorities intensify efforts to curtail underage drinking at summer festivals
Authorities in northwestern Iceland are taking a firm stand against underage drinking during the summer festivals this year. A collaborative effort between the police and event organizers of Húnavaka in Húnabyggð and Eldur in Húnaþingi aims to prevent alcohol consumption among minors.
The police will be carrying out particularly stringent supervision of illegal alcohol consumption among young people at Húnavaka and Eldur in Húnaþingi. Cases will be followed up as deemed necessary.
There will be heavy monitoring at both festivals, where rules stipulate that alcohol should not be handed over to anyone who has not yet turned 20, based on their birthday. Also, no one who has not yet turned 20 is allowed to consume alcohol.
According to an announcement on the Feykis website, if the police become aware of underage drinking, all alcohol will be poured out and if the person involved is under 18, the matter will be reported to child protection services, and a conversation will be held with the parents.
The police in northwestern Iceland are seeking volunteers to assist with parental patrols during the festivals. Húnavaka will be held from July 17 to July 21, and Eldur in Húnaþingi in Hvammstangi will take place from July 23 to July 28.
