Train derailment in Norway results in potential delays and cancellations

Delays and potential cancellations are to be expected following a train derailment, says Vy, Norway’s primary train operator. The incident was relatively minor according to Vy’s Communications Director, Åge-Christoffer Lundbu. He stated that the derailed train was a passenger train that was not in service at the time of the incident. The Lillehammer–Moelv railway line is currently closed due to the derailment.

The derailment occurred during the coupling of two train sets at the Lillehammer station. “During the coupling, we ended up in a situation where one of the train sets was off the track. We need to assess the extent of the damage to both the infrastructure and the train set before we can resume operations,” said Press Officer Øystein Stavdal Paulsen of Bane Nor, the organization responsible for the Norwegian national railway infrastructure.

It is currently unclear when the line will reopen. Before this can happen, an assessment of the damages must be made and the derailed train must be re-railed. It is difficult to estimate how long this process will take.
