Watching the Summer Olympics can ignite enthusiasm for new sports. In recent weeks, news sites and social media channels have been filled with highlights of gymnasts defying gravity. One standout is American talent Simone Biles, who has won seven Olympic gold medals and 23 world championships. According to Maria Laakso, the executive director of the Finnish Gymnastics Federation, interest in gymnastics shows a slight increase during the Olympics. She noted that visibility in major sports events helps people connect with the sport.

“For instance, after the 2015 Gymnaestrada, our member clubs saw a ten percent increase in participants. The Gymnaestrada is an international gymnastics festival held every four years,” Laakso explained.

Laakso highlighted Biles as a source of inspiration for many young gymnasts. “She delivered an incredible performance in Paris, bringing attention to the importance of mental well-being for athletes,” she remarked.

Biles, at 27, challenges the notion that gymnasts must peak at 16, a message Laakso believes is vital for evolving the culture of the sport. Many countries are working to raise the average age for female gymnasts.

Laakso also emphasized the importance of role models in sports, sharing her admiration for Nadia Comăneci, a Romanian gymnast who won five Olympic golds, two world championships, and nine European titles. “Idols inspire young athletes to step into the gym.”

While elite gymnastics demands rigorous training and focus, it also brings joy, especially after mastering difficult moves. In contrast, recreational gymnastics requires only interest and the willingness to explore the sport. Laakso advises curious individuals to check the Finnish Gymnastics Federation’s website to find local clubs, many of which offer free trials. “I encourage everyone to give it a try; it promises to be rewarding.”
