Rental fees for festival sites in Finland vary drastically, with Turku charging as little as €700 for some events while Tampere demands over €100,000 for others, according to a Yle investigation.
In Turku, the city charges the Kesärauha and Down by the Laituri (DBTL) festivals just €700 each for their venues. However, Ruisrock, another major Turku festival, pays €29,000 for its site in Ruissalo National Park. Turku’s event director, Antti Kirkkola, justified the low fees by citing the economic benefits festivals bring, such as Ruisrock’s estimated €18 million boost to the local economy.
In contrast, Tampere’s Blockfest paid €106,800 last year, with €90,000 of that covering the rental of Ratina Stadium. The remaining €16,800 was for surrounding areas, despite the festival’s site being roughly the same size as Kesärauha’s. Tampere’s service coordinator, Anna Pääsky, explained that fees are determined case-by-case, factoring in area size, event duration, and attendance. Blockfest’s high cost is partly due to the extensive downtown restrictions during the event.
Seinäjoki’s Provinssi festival secures a 20-hectare site for €5,500, the lowest among major Finnish festivals. Festival director Ville Koivisto acknowledged the disparities, noting that fees reflect infrastructure and location.
Ruisrock’s promoter, Mikko Niemelä, described the €29,000 fee as significant but not excessive, while Kesärauha’s director, Pietu Sepponen, cautioned that rental fees alone do not capture the full cost picture for organizers.
