Swedish rail operator Trafikverket has reduced train speeds across multiple routes to prevent derailments amid rising heat, as the risk of track buckling—known locally as solkurvor—grows, SVT reports.

Speed restrictions are primarily in place in western, southern, and central regions, with no full line closures yet ordered by Trafikverket. However, many services are delayed or cancelled as operators opt against running at reduced speeds.

“We have a challenging day ahead,” Trafikverket press officer Peter Jonsson told TT. He noted recent disruptions from track buckling, fires, and vehicle faults, though he declined to speculate on heat as the cause.

Lower speeds significantly reduce derailment risk, and restrictions will remain as long as high temperatures persist. Even on the Bollebygd line—reopened three weeks after a derailment—speeds stay reduced, with SJ substituting buses for some services.

Road traffic has seen minimal impact, with only one report of “bleeding” asphalt in the past 24 hours, though the risk increases with prolonged heat.

“The heatwave creates a tough situation,” Jonsson said. “We have contingency plans, but the challenge is pinpointing where problems will occur.”
