A zero-budget fan film currently in production in Vaasa explores how James Bond became a 007 agent, marking the third Bond-inspired project by local filmmaker Benjamin Kalliomäki, Yle reports.

The film, set before the events of the official Bond series, follows the young naval commander’s transition into secret service. British actor Jack Ballard stars in the lead role, supported by an international crew of volunteers from Finland, Sweden, and the UK. Production began in early spring, with key scenes scheduled for summer when British cast members arrive.

Kalliomäki, who previously directed two Bond fan films—Shadows from the Past and The Death Collector—said the idea stemmed from wanting a younger, preferably British actor for the role this time. The story focuses on Bond’s unawares training in the Royal Navy before his first mission. “No one knows how he became 007,” Kalliomäki noted. Collaborations with British contributors aim to keep the narrative as authentic as possible.

Filming locations include Vaasa’s Sky Bar, Bock’s Corner Village’s old brewery warehouses, Raippaluoto island, and the coastal areas of Pietarsaari. Local partners such as Salsa Vaasa, Hotel Vallonia, and the University of Vaasa are involved. The production also features Bond-style props, including an Aston Martin loaned by a local owner, along with futuristic elements like an electric helicopter and a transparent phone.

The roughly hour-long film, classified as a non-profit fan project, will be released on YouTube next year. Kalliomäki’s earlier works have garnered over 1.5 million views combined. Volunteers are still needed for casino scene extras, with formal attire encouraged.

All participants work without pay, receiving credit in the film and invitations to the premiere. Kalliomäki described the project as a passion-driven tribute, offering hands-on filmmaking experience to those involved.
