Porvoo’s historic boutique hotel changes ownership after parent company’s bankruptcy
The company behind Porvoo’s Old Town boutique hotel Hôtel Pariisin Ville has filed for bankruptcy, though the hotel will continue operations under new ownership, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The bankruptcy follows financial struggles linked to a major fire in August 2022 at the adjacent Meat District restaurant, which also housed a hotel-owned apartment. The blaze destroyed the restaurant—operated by the same owner—and led to a six-month suspended prison sentence for then-owner Riku Stenros on charges of endangering public safety and construction violations. A restaurant employee was also fined for negligent fire handling.
Despite the bankruptcy of Hotelli Pariisin Ville Oy, the hotel remains operational. Management confirmed to Yle that day-to-day operations continue unchanged after the property and restaurant were transferred this spring to a new company, MD Dining Oy. Existing bookings remain valid, new reservations are being accepted, and gift vouchers are still honoured.
Hotel director Minja Sjöström clarified that Stenros is no longer involved in the new operating company but retains partial ownership of the building through a separate entity that leases the space to the hotel. Stenros confirmed the details to Yle but declined further comment.
Repair work from the 2022 fire, which required partial demolition of roof structures, continued as recently as summer 2024. The incident had severely disrupted the hotel’s operations, prompting Stenros to seek corporate restructuring last November.
