Surge in winter bathing popularity in Denmark as membership triples in a decade
As low temperatures loom, the popularity of winter bathing is surging. Membership in Denmark’s 188 winter bathing clubs has skyrocketed from around 25,000 to 75,000 over the last decade. Participants value the unique sense of community, often engaging in meaningful conversations while enjoying the warmth of shared saunas.
The appeal of winter bathing, according to trend expert Julia Lahme, lies in its invigorating nature. She explains that it offers a tangible experience of health and vitality, moving the focus away from quick fixes toward sustainable habits that enhance overall well-being. With reports of a lengthy waiting list for membership in some clubs and a sudden influx of new members, the demand is evident. For instance, since October, the Rantzausminde Havbadeforening has welcomed 180 new members, compelling it to pause further registrations.
In the early days, many members were retirees, but the demographic has shifted, now attracting a mix of students and remote workers. Currently, Rantzausminde boasts around 700 members aged 16 to 90, with an average age of 45.
Members express the joy of the experience, noting that it fosters a sense of camaraderie. Participants leave feeling rejuvenated, often sharing sentiments about overcoming personal challenges while enjoying the invigorating cold. The founders of Rantzausminde Havbadeforening delight in witnessing its growth and emphasize the significance of the community aspect.
Experts affirm that winter bathing is a trend poised to endure, with clubs eager to prioritize member experience over sheer numbers, ensuring a warm welcome for all who join.
