Kela’s proposal to reinstate fertility treatment reimbursements raises concerns over income disparities in Finland

According to expert assessments, the reinstatement of reimbursements for fertility treatments by the Finnish social insurance institution, Kela, would primarily benefit those with higher incomes. Lower-income individuals may still find it challenging to afford private fertility services, even with potential reimbursements. In fact, for the most financially disadvantaged, the costs associated with public healthcare services might also be prohibitively high.

Fertility treatments, especially at private clinics, tend to be quite expensive, with expenses potentially ranging from several thousand to over 10,000 euros, depending on the type and amount of treatment required. Currently, there is a proposal in Parliament from the government aimed at allowing reimbursements for private fertility treatments through Kela starting next year.

The previous government, led by former Prime Minister Sanna Marin, made the decision to halt these reimbursements, which has led to ongoing discussions regarding access to fertility services and the financial implications for those seeking assistance with conception. As policymakers consider this issue, the debate highlights the significant barriers faced by individuals with different income levels in accessing necessary medical treatments.
