There is a disconnect between the statements made by the Minister of Education and what the government is presenting in the budget proposal. This is the view of Jacob Eli Olsen, the chairman of the Faroese Teachers’ Union, in light of the proposed budget cuts amounting to 5.2 million Danish kroner for the public school system next year.
Olsen points out that alongside these financial reductions, there is a notable decrease in the number of civil servants due to age retirements. In their place, non-civil servant teachers will be stepping in, and the pensions for these new teachers will be drawn from the public school funding, further straining the budget.
He emphasizes that this transition will make the operation of public schools more expensive, and it highlights the lack of alignment between the minister’s intentions and the financial realities presented in the budget proposal. The impending cuts raise significant concerns about the future of the public education system in the Faroe Islands.
