A 52-year-old man has been detained by Södertörns District Court on charges of attempted extortion and aiding severe arson. This individual, previously wanted and absent from earlier hearings, was apprehended in Spain in August and has been in custody since while awaiting extradition. He arrived at Bromma Airport in Stockholm on Wednesday evening and was escorted by police to a vehicle.

During the court hearing on Thursday, he participated via video link from jail, accompanied by his lawyer. Prosecutor Anna Stråth claims the man, known as the “Playa Swede,” was behind an extortion attempt last autumn against Joachim Kuylenstierna, the former CEO of the publicly traded investment company Fastator. Kuylenstierna reportedly received threats demanding a payment of 100 million kronor (approximately $11.5 million), with further threats made against his close associates, including an arson attack on a colleague’s villa.

Evidence collected from a computer seized in the suspect’s Spanish residence revealed messages related to the extortion, according to Stråth. The motive for the attempts is linked to a multi-million investment made in a company associated with Kuylenstierna back in 2009, which did not yield the expected results, leading to financial losses for the investor connected to the case—reportedly, Falk.

Since early September, eight individuals have been charged in connection with the scheme, including two linked to the Vårbyn network in southern Stockholm and a lawyer. Charges against Jonas Falk are anticipated later. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Falk has a notable past; in 2010, he was identified as a key figure in a major drug trafficking operation known as “Operation Playa,” resulting in an 18-year prison sentence for cocaine smuggling, which was overturned in 2014. After being released, he received 3.6 million kronor in compensation from the state for his 3.5 years in custody.
