Council representative resigns in Strandabyggð following threats over no-confidence motion
A local council representative in Strandabyggð has announced plans to resign following threats related to a failed motion of no-confidence. The motion was brought forward by Matthías Sævar Lýðsson from the A-list of general citizens, targeting Thorgeir Pálsson, the municipal mayor. The no-confidence motion addressed repeated allegations of financial misconduct against a former council member and resident of the municipality.
The motion was ultimately rejected with a vote of three to two. In a statement, the mayor expressed hope that this outcome would lead to a more peaceful environment for the local government.
Members of the T-list indicated in their official note that they plan to consult with the municipal attorney and the Association of Icelandic Municipalities regarding the threats they received tied to the no-confidence proceedings.
One T-list member announced his resignation due to personal attacks related to the controversy. He highlighted the intense personal impact this situation has had on council representatives, stating, “It is unacceptable for the A-list’s supporters to show such behavior towards elected representatives. This conduct significantly affects our families and friends given the small community we live in. Therefore, I will be resigning from my position in the council as I cannot risk the well-being of my close ones if I continue in this role.”
This incident underscores the growing tensions within local government, reflecting deeper challenges related to personal conduct and the responsibilities of elected officials in small communities.
