Many researchers, politicians, and organizations have expressed support for the main features of the government’s new education reform, announced yesterday. However, one major concern looms: the elimination of the 10th grade. Andreas Rasch-Christensen, head of research at the Center for Pedagogy and Education at VIA University College, argues against scrapping the municipal 10th grade, emphasizing its importance for academic, social, and personal development.

Currently, the 10th grade serves as an independent unit for students who are unsure about their future educational paths or who may need additional time to prepare academically or socially. It also provides access to further education routes, including the now-targeted hf program.

The proposed reform includes replacing 10th grade with a new vocationally-oriented program called epx, lasting two to three years. Critics, including members from various political factions and organizations, worry that this change may undermine support for vulnerable groups who benefit from an additional year of academic consideration.

Claus Rosenkrands Olsen from Dansk Erhverv expresses concern that young people may not be adequately prepared for the workforce after the closure of the 10th grade. He emphasizes that as academic demands increase, there is a critical obligation to ensure that students are well equipped for higher education and employment.

Despite the criticisms, Children and Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye acknowledges the need for students to have time to consider their options and asserts that the new epx program will include opportunities for exploration similar to those offered in the 10th grade.

The proposed reform is still in negotiation stages and is open to input from various education sector organizations and other political parties, as the government seeks to finalize the details.
