Rørbye Rønn announces resignation as director-general of Danish Broadcasting Corporation

Maria Rørbye Rønn’s strong intuition guided her 15 years ago when she accepted the role of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s (DR) director-general even before the question was fully asked. Initially appointed on an interim basis, her internal drive quickly pushed her to seek a permanent position. As she considered stepping down from one of the most influential roles in the Danish media sector this summer, a weeks-long internal debate concluded with a clear decision.

Today, Rørbye Rønn announced her intention to resign as director-general next summer. At 60, she has spent most of her career at DR, starting as a lawyer and climbing the ranks to leadership positions, ultimately becoming director-general. Rørbye Rønn believes that her departure is timely, coinciding with the appointment of a new board before year-end, which will have ample opportunity to find her successor.

Despite the upcoming transition, she remains committed to ensuring a smooth handover for DR, an institution she feels has become a part of her identity. She proudly reflects on DR’s ability to adapt and maintain credibility in an era with overwhelming content choices for audiences.

Throughout her tenure, Rørbye Rønn faced challenges, particularly regarding the years-long failings within the DR’s Children’s Choir, which affected her deeply. She emphasized the importance of treating victims with dignity and respect and acknowledged her responsibility in addressing the issues.

While her future beyond DR remains uncertain, she is eager to apply her experiences elsewhere, though she is not yet ready to say goodbye to the organization she has devoted her career to.
