Strætó, the capital region’s bus service, is considering reducing departures on some routes and at low-demand times from 1 December, mbl.is reports.

Davíð Þorláksson, head of public transport in the capital region, said the changes would be limited and intended to make better use of the service. RÚV reported the plans first.

Strætó has expanded its service in recent months, including a substantial increase in autumn 2025 and more buses on its busiest routes this autumn. The current review aims to improve service where demand is greatest while potentially reducing frequency at quieter times.

The review includes whether to run fewer buses during school holidays, when passenger numbers fall on some routes. Davíð cited route 8, which serves Reykjavík University and the University of Iceland, as an example: he said the same frequency was not needed during Christmas, Easter and summer holidays, when activity at the universities is low or absent.

No final decisions have been made about which routes may be affected. Strætó is expected to announce the changes later in November, likely in the second half of the month.
