The Helsinki District Court has delivered an interim ruling in a case involving a 24-year-old man accused of attempted murder and arson. The court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect, causing the proceedings to be postponed until the assessment is completed.

The man is accused of committing arson by setting fire to an apartment in a residential building in Helsinki’s Konala district on March 7, which resulted in injuries to two individuals. According to Crime Commissioner Crista Granroth, there are allegations that he attempted to kill family members present in the apartment by igniting the blaze.

At the time of the incident, the apartment housed the suspect and five family members, the youngest of whom was just three years old. Granroth commented on the familial dynamics involved but refrained from providing specific details regarding the connections between the suspect and the individuals in the apartment.

The accused has denied all charges, asserting that he did not attempt to harm anyone and does not recall spreading gasoline in the apartment or igniting the fire. In March, Fire Chief Ville Estlander noted that the injuries sustained by the victims, primarily burns to their legs and their escape from the balcony, made the situation particularly unusual, as injuries in apartment fires typically result from smoke inhalation rather than direct burns.
