The announcement of establishing a NATO headquarters in Mikkeli has been positively received in the city. South Savo is one of Finland’s fastest-declining regions in terms of population, and this development is seen as a much-needed boost. Experts weigh in on the potential impacts of this news.

Heidi Loukiainen, the regional director of South Savo Entrepreneurs, expresses high expectations from local businesses, particularly in the service sector, restaurants, and retail, anticipating an increase in demand. Businesses are already beginning to prepare, including addressing language issues to accommodate a more permanent foreign population.

Mikkeli’s mayor, Janne Kinnunen, believes the NATO headquarters will elevate the city’s profile globally. He predicts significant regional economic effects, as local companies may offer services and goods to NATO personnel, and the construction phase is also expected to enhance the local economy. Kinnunen plans to negotiate with the government about the implications for service production and its funding.

Sami Kahilakoski, the head of Mikkeli airport, is uncertain about potential changes in traffic but assumes an increase is likely. Upgrades may be required at the airport if flights rise, and staffing adjustments could be necessary in the wintertime conditions.

Rasmus Aro, an expert in regional development, acknowledges the positive news but cautions that the NATO headquarters may not significantly alter the trend of declining development in the area. While some new jobs may arise, Aro notes that any direct influx from the military will be limited, suggesting that the headquarters may make Mikkeli a more significant city in Finland over the long term, potentially influencing future regional policy decisions.
