Authorities investigate tragic construction site accident in Helsinki

Investigations into the tragic accident at a construction site on Puutarhakuja in downtown Helsinki have progressed. A man died after falling into an excavation beside Kaisaniemi Park last Saturday. Authorities are examining whether the construction site barriers and safety measures were compliant with regulations.

Terrawise, the primary contractor, announced at 8 PM on Tuesday that preliminary information suggests the barriers were in accordance with guidelines. Additionally, Terrawise claims that general lighting in the area was sufficient during evening hours. The construction site has been empty on weekends. According to Terrawise, no gaps in the safety measures were observed after workers left for the day.

The Regional State Administrative Agency has granted permission to continue work at the site. Terrawise reports that the site is secured with double fencing, and there are designated detours and prohibitions on entering the work area.

“Authorities are currently investigating the events leading up to the accident. This incident is extremely regrettable, and we extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” said Tuomas Saarinen, CEO of Terrawise, in a statement.

Preliminary information obtained by the Regional State Administrative Agency and the police suggests that the barrier may have been displaced at the time of the accident. Kai Pietarila, the caretaker of a neighboring residential complex, previously revealed that after weekends, construction site barriers are sometimes torn down as individuals may shortcut through the site.
