Reykjavik University graduated 98 students at a ceremony in Silfurberg in Harpa on Saturday, mbl.is reports. The graduates included 91 master’s degree recipients, four doctoral graduates, two BSc graduates and one diploma recipient.

Hjördís Líney Aðalsteinsdóttir, who completed an MSc in human resource management and work psychology, spoke on behalf of the graduates. She said the university had given her opportunities that others had not been willing to offer.

“Education can open doors that are not necessarily open to you in the social environment you are born into,” she said.

University rector Ragnhildur Helgadóttir spoke about balancing different elements of higher education, including critical thinking, collaboration skills and preparation for working life. She said that balance was continually being reviewed and that developments in artificial intelligence had affected the discussion.

“We are seeing much less impatience with parts of degree programmes that focus on critical thinking and collaboration skills than we did just two years ago,” Helgadóttir said.

Sigríður Thorlacius and Guðmundur Óskar provided music, and Ásthildur Gunnarsdóttir, the university’s director of communications, hosted the ceremony.
