A man born in 2004 has been sentenced to nine and a half years in prison by the Oulu District Court for a homicide that occurred in Oulu in the spring. According to the verdict, the man fatally stabbed the victim in a playground located in the Kaukovainio district shortly before midnight on April 27. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras.

The court found Juuso Kauko Johannes Lukkari guilty of manslaughter. In addition to the lengthy prison sentence, Lukkari is required to pay various compensations totaling thousands of euros. This includes compensation for pain and suffering to the victim’s family.

Drugs played a role in the incident. During the court proceedings, the man did not provide a reason for his actions, but based on statements from another suspect, it was suggested that it might have been related to an alleged unpaid debt. A man who spoke about the debt claim made by Lukkari was charged as an accomplice to the manslaughter; however, those charges were dismissed.

Another man in his twenties was sentenced to a fine equivalent to 80 days’ pay for basic assault and theft, which occurred just moments before the homicide. He had arranged to meet the victim in the Kaukovainio playground to exchange drugs, but the situation escalated into an assault, during which he stole drugs from the victim. He admitted to hitting the victim with a hammer but claimed he was unaware of the other man’s intentions to stab the victim.

The ruling is not yet final, as an appeal to the Court of Appeals is possible. The case will continue to develop.
