New peer support program launched for parents of teenagers in South Ostrobothnia
In South Ostrobothnia, a new form of peer support for parents of teenagers has been developed, known as “Teinineuvola,” which encourages interaction among parents at similar life stages and includes expert-led discussions. This initiative has been collaboratively designed and implemented by various organizations, with Ulla Anttila from Moms for Kids association involved from the start. According to Anttila, Teinineuvola does not evaluate or judge parenting. “I would argue that we all, as parents, occasionally feel a bit lost. However, the focus here is that we are all in the same situation with our adolescents.”
The program emphasizes parental responsibility, shifting the focus from analyzing teen behavior to reflecting on parents’ own actions. “We don’t emphasize the teen’s behavior but rather how changing our own behavior can protect our relationship with them. It’s remarkable to see how altering our own conduct can influence a teenager’s actions.”
Teinineuvola is now expanding to cover five municipalities. It was originally launched as a closed peer group in Alajärvi and later as an open café concept in Evijärvi. This fall, it will adopt a hybrid model: expert presentations will be available online, followed by local discussions.
Guided by education and social professionals alongside trained volunteers, the sessions tackle topics that illuminate the worlds of youth for parents. Experts such as social media policemen, sexual therapists, and youth mentors have shared insights, underscoring the challenges of understanding teen life.
Anttila highlights the importance of peer connections among parents, noting that while younger children’s parents meet at playgrounds and family events, such opportunities diminish as children grow, making Teinineuvola a valuable support network.
Dr. Atte Virolainen, a social media doctor, finds the Teinineuvola concept promising, offering sage advice that “the awareness of one’s shortcomings is the beginning of wisdom.” He acknowledges the changing dynamics in society, which affect parenting and stresses that the responsibility ultimately lies with parents, even when faced with overwhelming challenges in today’s fast-paced world.
