US tariffs imposed under former president Donald Trump continue to constrain Aurubis Finland’s ability to expand in the American market, the Pori-based copper producer says.

According to CEO Reima Mäkelä, the company lost some customers after the tariffs took effect, as buyers sought alternative suppliers. Most existing contracts were retained, but growth plans for the US market have stalled.

Aurubis reports that customers have largely absorbed the added costs. Mäkelä notes that uncertainty over timing and implementation initially complicated operations, though advance preparation mitigated the impact.

Despite the tariffs, Aurubis continues to pursue new clients. Mäkelä says the company remains active in the market, though the tariffs weaken competitiveness by increasing total costs. No further changes to the tariff regime are expected, and current planning assumes the status quo will hold.

Aurubis, owned by Germany’s Aurubis AG, operates a production facility in Pori employing 330 people. The company is part of Europe’s largest copper producer.
