Damaged geotextile fabric raises concerns near Svínafellsjökull glacier in Iceland

A damaged geotextile fabric has been spotted near the popular hiking trail leading to the lagoon at the foot of Svínafellsjökull glacier in Iceland. Concerns were raised about the fabric starting to degrade and spread, as discussed in a Facebook group dedicated to tourism in the area. The landowner, Anna María Ragnarsdóttir, confirmed that she is aware of the situation and is monitoring the state of the fabric, which is not located within Vatnajökuls National Park.

The fabric was initially laid down to create a pathway to water in connection with a film project, covered then with gravel for protection. Anna explained that the area is boggy, and the fabric was meant to prevent erosion. She noted there have been comments on social media criticizing film crews for leaving a mess, which she dismissed as unfounded, stating that the crews have managed the areas respectfully.

In recent times, increased foot traffic along the trail has revealed the exposed fabric as gravel has eroded. Anna mentioned the decision regarding the future of the trail, and potentially the geotextile, would be made this autumn. In the interim, she indicated that the existing state of the fabric is likely to continue as the season changes.
