Drive, the production company behind TV 2’s prank show Everyone Loves Rasmus, has issued an “unreserved apology” to its star, comedian and actor Rasmus Wallbridge, DR reported.
Drive Studios chief executive Kasper Fredshavn said in a written comment to DR News that the company contacted Wallbridge directly on Saturday. “We are genuinely sorry for his experience with the programme,” he said.
Fredshavn said the aim had been to create a different kind of comedy series, but that the format went too far. The company should have done more to put itself in Wallbridge’s position, including after filming, he said.
The four-month experiment was filmed mainly with hidden cameras. All participants except Wallbridge knew the premise. A total of 149 of his friends and acquaintances, along with several well-known figures, took part in the prank. The prospect of developing a film, a major dream for Wallbridge, was central to the story. He was only given the chance to decide whether the footage should be released after filming had ended.
TV 2 withdrew the programme over the weekend after several days of criticism, including accusations that it amounted to bullying an adult, psychological torture and gaslighting. The broadcaster has also announced an internal investigation, which Drive says it supports and will contribute to.
Critics also pointed out that an extra laugh appeared to have been edited into the final episode, when the prank was revealed to Wallbridge. TV 2 confirmed that a laugh from another recording had been reused in the scene.
TV 2 content director Ulla Pors told Ritzau that the broadcaster needed to investigate the mistakes made during production. She said the criticism was justified and that the series should not have been made or released.
Wallbridge addressed the criticism in an Instagram post over the weekend, saying he was not in a position to take part in the discussion. After speaking with those close to him, he had decided to focus fully on work on his upcoming show, he wrote.
