Garðabær will introduce an electronic locker system at Ásgarðslaug, a public swimming pool, to stop visitors from taking locker keys home, mbl.is reports. The system is expected to be fully operational by December.

The change follows repeated complaints from residents that so many keys are missing that lockers cannot be used. Some regular visitors are suspected of keeping keys at home so they can always use the same lockers.

Residents have described the changing rooms as being in disarray. One said in April that only one of eight lockers along a wall had a key; another estimated that 20 lockers were unusable.

Garðabær Mayor Almar Guðmundsson said the electronic system would first be installed at Ásgarðslaug, where the need was most urgent. Similar systems are planned for the town’s other two swimming pools, in Álftanes and Urriðaholt. The Urriðaholt pool is a small school pool that residents can use outside school hours.

Guðmundsson said the aim was to have the system in all three pools within 12 to 18 months.
