US embassy warns citizens ahead of Reykjavík protest

The US Embassy in Reykjavík will close earlier than usual today because of a planned protest outside its building at Engjateigur 7, mbl.is reports.

The Iceland-Cuba Friendship Association plans to demonstrate against US trade sanctions on Cuba. The protest is expected to begin at 5 p.m.

In a security alert, the embassy urged US citizens to avoid the protest and exercise caution nearby. It warned that even demonstrations planned as peaceful can lead to confrontations or violence.

The embassy also advised US citizens to follow local news, stay alert to their surroundings and obey instructions from police and authorities.
