Court jails man for six thefts and drug offences
A man has been sentenced to five months in prison for six thefts and drug offences, including stealing goods worth nearly 700,000 Icelandic krónur from a ship in Reykjavík. The Reykjavík District Court ruling was reported by mbl.is.
The man admitted the offences. The judgment was issued on October 22 and published on Wednesday.
The ship theft took place on October 17 last year. According to the indictment, the man and another person stole 69 bottles of alcohol, including whisky, gin, rum and cream liqueur, as well as a Patagonia backpack and sweater and a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. The goods were valued at 699,051 krónur.
Soon afterwards, 1.58 grams of amphetamine were found during a security search of the man at the police station on Hverfisgata.
In August last year, he and another person entered a beauty salon in Reykjavík through a roof window and stole 6,500 krónur in cash, an Apple laptop, a safe and cosmetics. The indictment did not specify the value of those items. He also stole a bicycle from the stairwell of an apartment building in April last year and a tool box from a storage room in another apartment building in November.
He was also convicted of stealing sweets worth 1,435 krónur from a Krónan supermarket in October last year and a lamb forequarter worth 3,494 krónur from a Nettó supermarket in February this year.
In setting the sentence, the court took account of his full admissions. His defence lawyer said he had recently completed treatment and turned his life around. The court also noted that previous convictions for property crimes counted against him, as did the fact that some of the offences were committed with another person.
His criminal record dates back to 2002. He has repeatedly been convicted of drug offences and received prison sentences in 2021, 2024 and 2025, including for theft or attempted theft. Given his record, the court found no grounds to suspend the sentence. He was also ordered to pay 282,720 krónur in legal fees for his court-appointed defence lawyer, and the amphetamine was confiscated.
