Despite recent criticism of the West Rail project, its implementation is not in question, according to Matias Marttinen, chair of the National Coalition Party’s parliamentary group. “I proceed on the premise that we will follow all agreements made during the coalition negotiations,” said Marttinen, a Member of Parliament from Rauma.
He stated that the government is committed to investing approximately €450 million into the project, with local municipalities along the rail line also contributing to the funding. However, the reaction in these municipalities has been mixed. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (National Coalition Party) recently clarified that during this government term, only the endpoints of the West Rail will be built, and the construction of the express route from Salo to Lohja will be left to future administrations.
Municipalities that are set to share the costs have expressed disappointment over the project not receiving EU funding. Nevertheless, Marttinen indicated that securing EU funding is still a possibility. He emphasized that this initiative is a “whole government project” and highlighted the importance of unity within the coalition, stating, “It is essential to remember that this project was agreed upon by the entire government.”
In July, Transportation and Communications Minister Lulu Ranne (Finns Party) expressed skepticism about the project, stating that the lack of funding was not unexpected and that it doesn’t appear to provide a strong return on investment. However, in an interview on August 6, Prime Minister Orpo defended the West Rail initiative.
