Earthquakes recorded at Reykjanes Ridge and Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland

A series of earthquakes has been recorded on the Reykjanes Ridge and Reykjanes Peninsula this morning. Two significant tremors measuring over magnitude 2 were detected at Reykjanes Peninsula, the first registering at 2.3 and the second at 2.5. Additionally, five earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2 were noted approximately 23 kilometers southwest of Eldey, with the largest occurring at 7:30 a.m., measured at a magnitude of 3.

According to a natural hazard specialist from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, such seismic activity is common and does not necessarily indicate a direct connection to volcanic eruptions around the Svartsengi volcanic system. Earthquake activity in the region continues to intensify day by day, alongside ongoing land uplift. This suggests a possible impending volcanic event, with an increased likelihood of activity developing in the coming days.
