National Emergency Supply Agency renews crisis electricity reserves

Finland’s National Emergency Supply Agency is renewing its contingency arrangements to secure electricity supplies during crises, Yle reported. Its current reserve agreement with the Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant ends at the end of the year.

The agency is seeking a partner through a competitive tender. The partner would assemble a fleet of power plants suitable for the reserve system and be responsible for maintaining and developing the plants.

The backup electricity generation arrangement would be used only during serious disruptions and would not affect electricity prices. Only power plants that are no longer operating on the electricity market would be included in the system.
