Heavy rain raises rockfall risk in eastern Iceland

Rockfall is more likely during heavy rain forecast for southeastern Iceland, mbl.is reports, particularly at Hvalnesskriður, a set of slopes in eastern Iceland.

Southeasterly winds will strengthen over the southwestern part of the country tonight, with gusts reaching 35 metres per second at Kjalarnes, near Hafnarfjall and in northern Snæfellsnes. Similar winds may also affect the Eyjafjöll area.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s meteorologist warns that heavy rain could cause poor visibility in the southeast tomorrow afternoon and increase the risk of rockfalls, especially at Hvalnesskriður.
