Firefighters tackle major blaze at Toppstöðin building

Firefighters have largely extinguished a major fire at Toppstöðin in Elliðaárdalur, mbl.is reported. Around 30 firefighters were working at the scene, according to Birgir Finnsson, chief of the fire brigade in the capital region.

Finnsson said the blaze was among the largest fires the brigade had dealt with. He added that the fire brigade had previously responded to incidents connected to the building, which he described as having been “troublesome”.

Although firefighters believe the fire has been extinguished, embers may remain inside. “This is a large and complex building with little or no fire protection, so we are searching thoroughly,” Finnsson told mbl.is.
