South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, known as XAMK, is starting change negotiations that could lead to 30 redundancies, Yle reports, citing the university’s rector, Heikki Saastamoinen.

Up to 20 jobs could be cut among specialist and support staff, and up to 10 among teaching staff. The roles or employment contracts of about 100 employees could also undergo substantial changes.

The main aim is to change the university’s organisational model by bringing teaching together with research, development and innovation activities. The changes are expected to affect management-level employees most and could involve the university’s operations across the organisation.

Saastamoinen said the changes are not focused on any one campus. XAMK has campuses in Kouvola, Kotka, Savonlinna and Mikkeli, and employs just over 1,000 people. The university said it would seek to offer new roles to employees whose jobs are at risk.

XAMK also held change negotiations in 2024.
