Boat sinks for third time at Hafnarfjordur harbour

The boat Jokull sank overnight for the third time at the same berth in Hafnarfjordur harbour, mbl.is reported. Gudmundur Fylkisson, a police officer and harbour board member, said the boat had been moored there for many years.

Jokull first sank six or seven years ago and went down again five years later. No explanation was found for either incident, and there was no hole in the boat, Gudmundur said.

The unused boat had not been sailed or repaired between the incidents. Each time, it was brought back afloat by pumping water out. It had never been hauled ashore.

The boat was due to be scrapped in the coming days. Its owners had not wanted to dispose of it, but after the second sinking they were instructed to remove it.

Gudmundur said a photograph posted on a Hafnarfjordur residents’ Facebook page on Saturday showed the boat beginning to sink. He went to the harbour in the evening and saw pumps operating, and the boat had risen. By 7am on Sunday, however, it was fully submerged.

At low tide, Jokull was later standing mostly above the water.
