S and C seek to soften image of Left Party dependent government

Centre Party, Social Democrats, sweden election

Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson and Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist are presenting a red green government as centred on the political middle, according to an analysis by SVT political commentator Mats Knutson.

The strategy is intended to reassure centrist voters that such a government would not depend on the Left Party. Both the Social Democrats and the Centre Party fear that the image of a red green alliance reliant on the Left Party could drive away voters who may determine the election result.

That is why Andersson has appeared with Thand Ringqvist rather than Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar or the Green Party’s leaders. Andersson and Thand Ringqvist have also openly courted Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch.

The Centre Party has repeatedly said that it will never allow the Left Party into a government. However, current opinion polls indicate that all the red green parties may be needed to form a majority in parliament after the election. The Left Party’s demands for joining a government are also described as firm.

By highlighting a government option focused on the political centre, the Social Democrats and Centre Party hope to attract voters with general centre right views who oppose the Sweden Democrats but do not want the Left Party in government.

It remains unclear how realistic such a centrist government would be. The Centre Party’s ability to cooperate with the Social Democrats and Greens is one matter, but cooperation with the Christian Democrats would be another.

Regardless, the discussion serves an important purpose for the Social Democrats and Centre Party by blurring the division between a clearly left wing and a right wing alternative. Knutson describes it as a political effort to undermine the Tidö parties’ voter base, but warns that it could also backfire on Andersson. If she wins the election, she could face a very difficult parliamentary basis for forming a government.
